C-DAC Mumbai & Language Technology
C-DAC Mumbai has been actively involved in the area of Indian Language
Technology since 1975 (initially as part of TIFR). From the beginning it has directed its efforts at software solutions only. C-DAC Mumbai has adopted the multi-disciplinary approach with the participation of Linguists and calligraphers and has pioneered concepts of input, encoding and output for Indian languages right from the main frame and early plotter days. This has resulted in real applications of text processing, text editing for the whole gamut of computing devices, from PCs to the distributed web environments. It has proven its capabilities of developing innovative software solutions to address linguistic and technological issues concerning Indian languages.
The Language Computing Group (LCG) at C-DAC Mumbai
Today the Desktop technology solutions have emerged as user-friendly systems. The World Wide Web and growth in the field of multimedia have made knowledge dissemination instantaneous and available to masses. This has opened doors to a rich and complex human-centered environment.
LCG through their sincere attempts is offering Indian Language capabilities at various levels and platforms including the free and open-source operating systems like GNU-Linux so that information and communication technology is effectively used for multi-lingual informatics using local languages. LCG would like to establish various models of multi-linguality through fusion of Information Technology, Creative Designs, Applied Linguistics and Education to enhance the effectiveness of multi-lingual information and communication channels and modules.
